Death and the Maiden by EmmaMount Death and the Maiden by EmmaMount
a little bit of a few of my favourite things combined
pin-ups, skulls, tiki, spooky gothic...

This is an oil on canvas 16x24" portrait of the ridiculously gorgeous Missy Malone with thanks to CherryBombRock Photography for use of their reference photo found here [link]
It was a very kitsch n cute original photo, lots of turquoise n pink, but i wanted to make it my own as well as go a lot darker with it and explore the whole Death and the Maiden theme, although I think my modern day maiden pretty much has the measure of Death!

All criticism gratefully received, I am so used to painting big eyed Blythes at this point you forget what its like to paint human proportions lol!
In the flesh the painting is much more blended and there's much more lovely tones in the face, oh well, I'm no David Bailey!

thankyou ian!
i still like to keep my hand in, i love painting pin-ups and showgirls etc.
blythes sell better and faster though, so when you need the bills paying....
but i like painting them too, i find them pretty fascinating, a doll but its so alive!
almost spooky in a way
but i haven't left my grown up girls behind, never fear!

"Death & The Girl" was one of my biggest interests a few years back, and it still intrigues me. I love it.

cool, thanks!!
i read a little about it on the internet once i'd finished this piece, it is pretty fascinating indeed, i was thinking about the poem (where death comes to take the lovely maiden and she's not ready) and kind of wanted my girl to be a kick ass beauty who turns the tables on Death :)

I like what you did with the piece, Rosie.

If I were to critique it, I would suggest that the pinky looks a little small (although the other proportions are good), and I would add a little more modeling to her face planes. They seem more flat compared to those in the arm and hand. Lastly...and it's personal preference....I would add a few more tiny details (hair strand highlights, shine on lips, smaller detail shadows in skull, etc. This would add contrast from the larger shapes, and tend to be the final touches that make a piece sing.

Lovely, though. Just being nitpicky.

Jason

hi jason
sorry for the late reply
i really appreciate the time you took to really look at the painting and give me a little critique :)
You may be right about the hand, i basically made the hand up as the model's hand was positioned all wrong, and on top of that i hate painting hands with a passion, it was the bit i left till last and then agonised over.
In this photo she does look a little washed out, but there is more shades of skintones here on her skin when you see it in the flesh, i would have commented on the washed out face too, and there probably is still room for more (my other problem is i rush things as i'm impatient and always excited about the next idea!)
I think you're absolutely right about about the fact that i don't do the details so well - i hope i take your words and do something with them as you're completely right about that!!!

Not nitpicky at all, i appreciate your time, i love your work - and you are ALL about the details on some of your pieces, which truly end up looking astounding (re:kingkong)

Cool Rosie,

I'm glad you see it as constructive. I think that you are very talented, and we can all use another's opinion about our work, (as sometimes we get tunnel-vision) and I'm trying to push you to go to that next level. And with art..there's always a next level. I welcome all critiques as well for this reason.

Keep up the great work!

As a side note, I'd like to take a cue from you and do a series of paintings based on some of my action figures.....cause I'm a guy, and we don't call 'em dolls, you know? ; )

haha! they're action figures if you insist, but even superman wears tights which is doll territory!

go for it, i might branch into other toys too, i have spied a little red devil that i might paint next, he has bags of character! just painting another blythe at the mo, but i have listened and already i'm trying to put in many more little touches of white highlight already, although achieving your detail level would make me go blind!
